Barley news Scandinavia: Imports of malting barley from Denmark, Sweden and/or Finland to diminish as global demand seems so far easy to cover

If weather consents, it’s theoretically possible to harvest all Danish malting barley crops in 5 days, Sweden in 7 days and Finland in 6 days, H. Abildstrom & Co ApS released in its 07 Scandinavian Malting barley report of August 10. And weather has been permitting up to August 10 with very few and insignificant exceptions. In Denmark, the harvesting campaign has progressed well (75-80% in Lolland/Falster, 50-60% in Zealand-Fyn, over 25% in East Jutland, 25% in North Jutland). In South Sweden, crops were 30% harvested in East and North and 25% in South and West while in Mid Sweden harvest is reported to start in 2 weeks. In the South West region of Finland barley was cropped only from 2% of the yielded areas.

For some time now Scandinavian malting barley markets have been directed by France and South of Germany. The harvesting results there have given vent to some unrest. Question is, when all is in, whether there is serious reason for the firmness, all (including UK) taken into consideration.

Globally there will be a smaller crop but demand seems so far rather easy to cover. Russia is still bringing in nice barley which in principle will diminish import from Denmark, Sweden and/or Finland to very limited quantities. Malsters in Europe, though, might have to accept 88 screening and 11.8 protein or more. Buying interest difficult to find, but experts expect some turnover, once UK, DK and Sweden have finished harvesting.

The price of Danish/Sweden Barke and/or Prestige malting barley is €141.00 basis 3000ts, maximum 14.5% moisture, FOB 1st half of October (€139.00 for other varieties of malting barley).
